How to stay cool in a heatwave when pregnant

by Rachel Sammut

It’s normal to feel a bit hotter than usual when you’re pregnant. But being pregnant in a heatwave can be very uncomfortable, and you should avoid getting too hot. These are our top ten tips for pregnant women to stay comfortable during a heatwave:

1. Stay hydrated

Make sure you drink more water, and keep a small reusable water bottle with you at all times.

2. Wear cool clothing

Opt for loose, lightweight clothing made from natural fabrics.

3. Don’t over exert yourself

This is important, particularly in the first trimester.

4. Avoid being in the sun

Avoid the sun, especially between 11am and 3pm. Don’t forget to apply sunscreen when you are in the sun.

5. Have lukewarm showers / baths

This is because cold water makes you retain heat.

6. Reduce salt intake

Reducing salt will help you combat water retention.

7. Sleep

Try to sleep more and take an afternoon nap in a cool room if possible.

8. Put your feet up

Putting your feet up will help you avoid swollen feet.

9. Go for a swim

A swim is great. Alternatively, you can dip your feet at the beach, pool, or a paddling pool at home.

10. Time your outings wisely

Early mornings or late evenings are the coolest times of the day so if possible try to plan your outings then.

IMPORTANT: Always refer to your Ob/Gyn, Midwife or Mater Dei’s Delivery Suite if you have any concerns.
